~why I get NO sleep~

~He falls asleep in my arms (usually after eating)

~I let him stay there for 15-20 minutes...thinking he's FAST asleep.

~I then put him in his bassinet....

~He wakes up within 5 minutes.

~End result: I get no sleep and nothing done. Oh well!!

~I didn't think I was spoiling him...but maybe I have?!?!?!

Maybe you just need more practice in transferring a sleeping baby without waking him up?

He's asleep when I put him in the bassinet and wakes up 5-10 minutes later so he doesn't wake up in the transferring process.

I don't know how you could 'practice' this...there's really no other way to do this...walk to bassinet, insert baby.

Here are some tips we used at the daycare:
1. Put a heating pad in the bassinet/crib to warm it up & then remove it just before you put him in there.
2. If he wakes up afte ryou lay him down, try gently shaking the bed just to create a little motion. That may lull him back to sleep.
3. Is there somewhere else he sleeps better than the bassinet? My baby brother slept in his car seat for the first six weeks of his life because he would NOT sleep in his bassinet. He flat refused.

And no, you are not spoiling him. He's too little to be spoiled. I know that my friends Heather & Alison reached a point when they were ready to do the cry it out for a few minutes thing. They would let the babies fuss for 5-10 minutes before picking them up again & sometimes they would go back to sleep on their own. That's a personal choice though & I know it can be hard to listen to a baby cry. You have to decide what is right for you & Ethan. =)

Dawn-thanks for the tips. I will have to try them. He sleeps great @ night in his bassinet, it's just during the day that we struggle.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be too good at the 'let them cry' theory...but that's just me. :-)

In my opinion a nap is a nap where ever & however it happens. We had lots of babies at daycare that would not nap in their cribs when they were tiny. We let them nap in the swing or the bouncy seat or where ever they dozed off. We felt the sleep was more important than the location. Maybe Ethan would prefer to nap somewhere other than his bassinet? Or maybe he just sleeps better in a dark environment, so he wakes up more easily during the day?

As far the crying it out thing goes, everyone has their own threshold for that. Remember Heather & Alison are on their second & third kids, respectively, and that seems to build the tolerance for allowing a little fussing. Also, I think their babies were a few months old at that point. But that is one of those things that everyone has to determine for themselves. No one can tell you what feels right to you. Some people can't take the crying & others can't deal with a baby that would prefer to be held -- there's no right or wrong answer, just what works best for you & Ethan. =)

Dawn...yep, I'm thinkng that Ethan just doesn't like sleeping in his bassinet during the day evn though I keep the bedroom dark.
