~having the bed to myself~

~My son is almost 14 months old. We have been co-sleeping since he was about 3 months old. Bad habit to get into, but a very loving feeling when he's all cuddled up next to me. This also displaced my husband onto the sofa bed as our bed is not big enough to accommodate all 3 of us.

~I have been wanting to transition the little guy to his crib for sometime, but kept putting it off because having him in bed w/me is just easier when he wakes in the middle of the night (numerous times). He has been progressively more fidgety at night, rolling over etc. I often have feet in my face or get clunked in the head with a fist and so I have finally taken the 1st steps in relocating him to his crib. Ultimately, it's just too dangerous to keep him in bed with me at this point, I'm afraid he will fall out of the bed.

~Both books and many people have recommended doing this in steps. For example, this week he will sleep in his Pack N Play in my room, next to my bed. The next phase is to move the Pack N Play into his room and still have him sleep in it and then finally moving him to his crib. The first night (Sunday) was rough, he woke up @ least 4 times, one time staying awake for about an hour because he was so upset, thankfully though, I was able to get him back to sleep and in the Pack N Play. They say it takes a few days and he should get used to it...so I say is it Friday yet? :)

~I'm really going to miss him not cuddling with me at night, but in the end, I KNOW that he'll be back...when he's 2, 3, 4 years old. That's what kids do. :)

~Well, today is my mom's birthday and in her honor I am skipping my Death & Dying class tonight and we are all going out to dinner. A great day in store, I can tell already!!

Can totally relate as I had the same problem with little boy (the girls had no problems sleeping in their cribs from day one) and I, too, did the transition thing which worked quite well after several days. Hang in there; it'll work out for all of you and I'm sure your husband will be happier for it.

My daughter never slept in my room and it seemed easier that way, but my son sleeps in a bassinet now, we tried moving him into his beautiful nursury but it didn't work. We'll try again an a couple of weeks but when he's not next to me I toss and turn even with him sleeping happily.

Hi, I'm only 15 but I love reading your blog, which inspired me to create my own blog of course. Also, I remember when my little brother would never sleep on his own, and as a baby he cried almost every other hour. A few times I had to get up myself to wake my mom up because she was so tired lol. But what she did, for me, him, and my little sister apparently, was let us sleep in our car seats and eventually moved us to our own rooms.

Before my son was born we turned a spare room into his nursery and left the bed in there figuring he would eventually end using it.After he was born I had trouble sleeping if I was right there. So the bed ended up mine for about a year. I had to transition myself. Too funny!

I'm sure your hubby will really enjoy being back in the bed!

Good luck! I hope every night gets better.

Funny, my son's been in a crib since he was four months, and now that he's 11 months I'm thinking of how much easier it would be to have him in the bed with us! I must be burning a lot of calories from the multiple trips into his room from our room (lately anyway), trying to put him back to sleep, getting frustrated!, back and forth, back and forth...oh, will it ever end?! Keep up the good work!

So cute. "And I love the part when you said that your baby will be back when he's already 2, 3, 4, years old because that's what most kids do." You're a great mother to your child.

wow. Did your husband sleep on the coach for 11 months? i feel bad for him if that's so.

My son, who is about 18 months now has been sleeping in his on crib since came from the hospital. I didn't feel it was safe to have him in the bed with us. My wife tends to move around at night and we didn't want any accidents.

We had the crib in our bed room, so i guess that made it much easier to nurse him. but since 10 months he's been sleeping in his own room.

I'm going to toss an idea out there in a general sense, since you know E best, but do you think maybe he's becoming more restless at night because you're waking each other up at this point? Maybe once he gets used to sleeping in his own space, you'll both get a better night's sleep. I know it can't be easy though. (((HUGS)))

What a breath a fresh air to read your blog. I am feeling guilty these days as I am co-sleeping with my lil one, too. He is 10 months and I struggle with the good mom/bad mom thing. My boyfriend does not mind, but I know he is ready to have the bed back. I am struggling with having some good sleep too, but I dont know...I find such comfort in having his lil body next to me. The pack in play is definitely the next step. Thanks for making me feel normal.
